Hi Brian,
I've never had this problem but if I were you I'd look in the BIOS first to check it's set the way you expect. ie boot from CD is enabled etc.

I agree Brian , should not need to format , you can prove that by putting the HD in another comp .

No need to bolt it in , just hang it off the cables outside the case .

To me , it is something to do with the motherboard , maybe something is not connected properly .

I've changed the BIOS alot of times, still no luck...

Motherboard is connected properly

Is there anyway to hook the HD up to another pc and install that motherboard onto the device manager on that HD?

your post said: "loops at a white loading bar when it is full" which means that it has be getting past Bios and any boot menu options and is spinning up the hd. To me this indicates and issue with the HD or installation of the OS and not the hardware. You should be able to Tap f8 and before you get to the "white bar" be able to select Safe Mode, or whatever... also you should be able to enter your bios, change primary boot device to CD Rom and boot to XP Cd and look at some recovery console options without reformating.

Also putting the HD in another machine is somewhat useless as you can not put it as primary boot device in different hardware (XP will lock up becuase it is not the original machine) and putting it as a secondary device in another machine will only verify if the hard drive is in good operation and that you still have files on it, but *WILL NOT* verify that the OS on the drive is in good operating condition.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Michael

When i tap f8 and select safe mode etc. the computer just restarts. And i have selected the CD-rom to boot up as primary boot device and still does not boot.

in rare occasions (and I think it to be with only certain motherboard manufacturers) I have seen the inability to boot to CD Room (even when selected in Bios) as a result of a bad or wrongly configured HD or cripled OS.

If you disconnect your Hard Drive are you then able to boot to CD?

You may have to put the drive in a secondary hd on another machine, backup your data and re-format and install the OS. Not sure what else to tell you if you can't boot to CD in the existing PC. Let me know if you have problems accessing the drive in the new machine... that may suggest Hardware Issues or a damaged partition/logical drive. "R-Studio" from www.r-tt.com is an excellent program that I have used to recover data from a failing HD or corrupted drive/partition.

I'm having the exact same problem only I can boot to CD. I luckily had a second HD installed with just an OS on it and am re-installing XP. I tried everything he was and couldn't not get it to boot. I have an ASUS mobo as well. Brand new, right out of the box and I'm guessing it could have been what was mentioned in an earlier post about the OS being corrupted or it just not being the original mobo. I don't think there is another solution other than re-installing.

Just don't install the OS back on the same drive that may be suspect of damage. Doing so could cause further damage and/or loss of your personal data. I would recommend trying to put the HD in 2nd machine to backup your files first. If your HD does not show up under "My Computer" then check Disk Management and see if it shows up as a foreign disk... you may then have to import/accept (can't remember the exact phrasing) the disk before showing up in "My Computer". If the disk shows up in "My Computer" but when you try to access it and get "parameter incorrect","Disk can not be asked", or "Disk is not formatted, format now?" then click no/cancel. This is an indication that either there is damage either physically to the drive or to the partition itself. In such occasions I have found R-Studio from www.r-tt.com to be very successful in recovering data from a damaged/corrupt drive. Be advised if the drive is physically damaged your are usually running on borrowed time. You want to get your data as fast as possible, use the drive as little as possible and keep it as cool as possible.

My PC doesn't have an Asus MB and was running great for 2 years with Windows XP Home, and last week it hung up in the windows boot screen and it won't go into safe mode, last good config, plus it won't boot from the system startup floppy, or CD. I'm guessing that it's probably not hardware related, but most likely a corrupted startup files in the software. Still troubleshooting the problem at this time.
