Subject: Windows XP Blue Screens with NDIS.SYS |
Comment: Ok, I just upgraded a windows 2000 Pro installation to Windows XP. The problem is, whenever the computer detects a network card, it blue screens, with the error message "IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL" and reporting NDIS.sys. I've tried 3 different cards now (2 Realtek 8139-based cards and a 3COM etherlink PCI), all with the same results. All 3 cards worked fine with windows 2000 pro. I've tried playing with PnP in bios (pnp os yes/no, reset config. data, auto/manual resource control) to no avail. I've also played with all the different memory shadowing and caching options, still nothing. Any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated.

Reply: (edit)It may not be an ethernet card problem. Theres a conflict somewhere else, try removing extra cards ie. sound, modem and see if you get the same problems. Might be a mobo problem too, that would suck... May have to stick with 2k until you find a patch or new driver. --Chris

Reply: (edit)yeah, i thought it could be mobo also, but XP seems to go fine if i dont use NDIS.sys (ie, dont have a network card) I was wondering is there any way to force a restore of this file or others from the CD? the datestamp on ndis.sys makes me think it may not have been replaced from 2000pro.

Reply: (edit)I get the same problem sometimes. It only happens rarely and I have 2 network cards in my computer (1 for ADSL and one for ICS). I usually get different driver names with the blue screen but I have seen NDIS.SYS several times. Its really fustrating and I've been looking for someway to prevent it. Like I said it dosen't happen all the time, about 5 times a week though. It is ALWAYS when I am downloading so I am really thinking that it has something to do with the network card(s). I also run XP. If you find anything please email me and let me know. Thanks! Scott

Reply: (edit)ONLY 5 Times a day!? If I were ONLY so lucky! It seems to always come out when i'm browsing/downloading at full speed. It seems my computer tends to hang for about a second at times too a lil' bit before i get the blue screen....maybe it has to do with the same thing. If only Microsoft would do something about it..

Reply: (edit)I also have the MSI K7T 266Pro-R, same problem. I have tried updating chipset drivers, onboard sounddrivers, no improvement. I have only one pci slot in use: network card, originally another brand, but showed up (and has worked in XP) as "Realtek RTL8139". It has IRQ 10 as resource. My XP worked great for a month or so, then just started with these BSODs... argh!

Reply: (edit)I get the same error, but I only started getting it after I installed Pcanywhere v10.5 in my computer. It only blue screens when I'm connecting to a remote computer. I'm changing the video card out to see if it helps. I've also noticed that ALL my pnp devices (actually everything) is usuing IRQ9. I think that might have something to do with it.

Reply: (edit)I have been getting this problem also, but mine only happens when I am downloading at high speed on my cable modem and only in Windows 2000 Pro. I have a dual boot setup with Windows 98 and I don't get this problem when running in 98. BTW, I have an ABIT BP6 motherboard.

Reply: (edit)I have been getting the IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL BSODs as well. I tend to get the error after my machine has been standing for a while. I noticed that it occurs when I un-lock the machine and proceed to launch Mozilla 0.9.6 and AOL AIM 4.7.2480. It does seem like a network problem. I was searching for info on that and came across a Driver_IRQL.... for the NVIDIA Graphics cards. Do you guys/girls have NVIDIA chips in your computers? Here's the Specs of my machine: 1GHz Athlon (TB) 512MB Generic Ram Abit KTA7-RAID 2x IBM 75GXP 45GB HDD in RAID-0 ASUS 7700 Deluxe (NVIDIA GeForce 2 GTS) Plextor Plexwriter 12/10/32A Pioneer DVD-115 SB Live! Platnium 5.1 Realtek RTL8139 Generic FireWire Card ... I think that's it... Any help would be appreciated.

Reply: (edit)I was glad to see I was not alone with this error message. Other web forums I have read point to the AGP driver of a VIA motherboard conflicting with Windows XP. I have downloaded the latest motherboard and AGP drivers from VIA, and I still get this error message and the blue screen of death. My problem only occurs when I play Everquest online, which is now using DirectX 8.1 and is a grapically intense workout for my GEForce3 video card. I have read that people do not have this problem when using Win98 or ME. I may have to re-install WinME (or at least dual boot ME and XP) so that I can play my favorite game, at least until this problem is fixed.

Reply: (edit)Have a HP Pavilion N5350 Laptop and have just instaled XP Pro with same result. When using my Hi speed Scientific Atlanta cable modem DPX210 I have the blue screen and a fatal crash but when using my card Bus Adapter SMC 8035TX I do not have this problem. It seems related to this DPX modem. I have also noticed that this took place after a failed install of Roxio Adaptec Viewer for my CD writer... bad problem has it takes away the benefits of XP as I had no problems before with Me

Reply: (edit)I had these blue screens with any sort of firewall while using my cable modem on XP. I got rid of BlackICE and Zone Alarm and now I just use the NAT firewall in my Linksys router and no more blue screens.
