when i run any program in dos mode (or the command prompt emulation of it) such as edit.exe or qbasic.exe the computer acts as if i was holding down shift and highlights text as i scroll through it with the arrow keys, it never used to do this and i have no idea what happened ... thanks in advance to anyone who could help
i think there are certain files that dictate how xp will perform in dos emulation mode ... all i know is this problem never existed before and now i cannot fix it

You should remember that the XP command prompt isn't a DOS emulator. It is nothing more than 32-bit command line interpretor. DOS programs won't run correctly.

no the shift key works fine everywhere in windows just not in the cmd prompt text editing programs. and i did install several new software programs but i did not notice the change until they had already been on the computer for a while.
