Comment:

when i run any program in dos mode (or the command prompt emulation of it) such as edit.exe or qbasic.exe the computer acts as if i was holding down shift and highlights text as i scroll through it with the arrow keys, it never used to do this and i have no idea what happened ... thanks in advance to anyone who could help

i think there are certain files that dictate how xp will perform in dos emulation mode ... all i know is this problem never existed before and now i cannot fix it

You should remember that the XP command prompt isn't a DOS emulator. It is nothing more than 32-bit command line interpretor. DOS programs won't run correctly.

did you install any new software just before it started stuffing up?

also, i know this sounds silly, but does the shift key work properly at other times? it isnt being held down by anything? your keyboard works fine other than that?

no the shift key works fine everywhere in windows just not in the cmd prompt text editing programs. and i did install several new software programs but i did not notice the change until they had already been on the computer for a while.
