I am trying to get my friends computer on the internet and I installed a US Robotics modem in the machine. The driver install went well and the Device Manager shows the device as functioning properly. The problem is the OS doesn't seem to be able to use the modem. It shows its there with no conflicts but there is no Dial Up Networking Folder and when you try to make a new connection to an ISP the option to make a dial up connection is grayed out. What can be done to get this fixed so he can get on the Internet.

M$ keeps changing things around with each version.

In w2k control panel, and maybe XP, there's no dialup.

Go to control panel > networking and dialup and see if you can set it up there.

TROUBLE SHOOTING STEPS:
1) In Control Panel --> Administrator Tools --> Services Please Locate the --> Remote Access Connection Manager <-- and click on it. Then start this service. ( And Make the Start Type as Automatic) . If it lets you start it then Dial Up Modem option will be ungrayed out.

If it tells you error Code 5 access denied

THEN PROCEED WITH THE FOLLOWING

1) Click Start, Run, then type regedit and click on OK. Then the Registry Editor would come up.

2 o to Start/Administrative Tools/Services. Set these three to "Automatic":

Telephony, Remote Access Connection Manager, Remote Access Auto Connection

Manager. then try, or else

3 In the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RasMan\PPP\EAP.

Delete ALL subkeys (folders) listed except 13 and 4.

4) Reboot machine

After Restart Again Try to Create the Dial Up Connection Manually and now the Connect Using dial Up Modem Option would be Ungrayed and You should be able to select the Option and complete the New Connection Wizard and will be able to connect thru the new connection.
