I am a new Windows XP SP 1 user. I was looking in the Add/Remove program and I saw that on the right side of this folder is some items.
"Change or Remove programs"
"Add New Programs"
"Add/Remove Windows Components"
"Set Program Access and Defaults"

I am not sure how these things are supose to be used. For instance, if I was going to add a Quicken program from a disk that I have onto my computer, would the proper way to do this is to use the "Add New Program" or can I still do it by just putting the Quicken CD into the CD Rom drive and tell it to install? What is the proper procedure of installing?

Also, please explain to me each of these items that I found in the Add/Remove program that I mentioned above.

Tammy, the Add/Remove Programs feature is primarily used to uninstall programs. I've never seen anyone use it to actually install a program. However you could use Add/Remove Windows Components, which are components that are built inside Windows but aren't installed unless the user specifically needs them. The best way to familiarize yourself with Add/Remove Windows Components is to go into it and click on the details for the various components.

With regards to Quicken, I would simply put the install CD in your CDROM/RW and let it auto load.

...and having Installed your Quicken - if you go to Add\Remove you'll see it listed there - then if ever you wish to Uninstall it you go there to do it

Well, I clicked on the "Add New Programs"
to see what it was about. It had the link to "Windows Update" and said to "add a program from CD-Rom or floppy disk, Click on CD-Rom or Floppy".

I might give this a try with a game disk just to see how it works. I won't chance it with my quicken program. It sure looks like this is the way to add programs to this computer. I will check this out later. I have to get dinner and I will be to busy tonight to check it out.

Thanks anyway.

Tammy1949 Yes programs can be installed using the Add New Programs feature found in the Add/Remove window. Or as suggested above just put the CD in the drive and let it autorun. The results will be the same either way.
