I recently installed Xp x64 and han't noticed much differnent how ever i han't used it much. I think the best option would be to dual boot with 32bit. Most software seems to be compatible and there is lots of software being built for 64bit. You may gave a problems with some devicesthat havn't got any 64 bit drivers.
