Windows wont start / missing file

CPU/Ram: 256
Product: HP pavilion ZT1000

My laptop wont start windows, it says that windows can not start due to a file missing or corrupted. \windows\system32\config\system
Is this something that I can fix with my XP cd? how can I fix it? I'll appreciate any help and suggestions
