Comment:

I recently started up my computer and found that it wouldnt proceed past the windows XP loading screen. I have no idea why it just stops there and looks as if it is loading, it just continues to do this until i restart it... The only way i can actually access XP is through safe mode and i've tried a system restore in safe mode but with no results.

Any suggestions because I have no idea whats wrong?

Regards, Cameron

Assuming you have done the basics, check for virii, trojans, spyfiles, try a repair.

ReInstalling WindowsXP
http://www.onecomputerguy.com/windowsxp_tips.htm
If you need to reinstall WindowsXP and want to keep all your current installed applications and settings:
1. Start WindowsXP
2. Go to the location of your source files
3. Run WINNT32 /unattend
For example, D:\I386\winnt32 /unattend ( copy & paste this command into the RUN box, then press ENTER ) Your computer will do the rest.
Or,
Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt.
Copy & paste > D:\I386\winnt32 /unattend
Press Enter.
If you have i386 on your drive, you can replace D: ( if D: is your cd drive ) with the location of it.

Ok so far i have updated my spyware detector and scanned, finding nothing. I have also updated vet antivirus and scanned also with no viruses found. I ran one of the trojan programs and it also found nothing.

Does this mean i can rule out a virus?
Is there anything else this problem could be caused by?

I just tried to shutdown and an end process box appeared with a reference to a running dde server?

I'm not sure what a dde server is but could this be cause of the problem?

Just googled > dde server.

See if it means anything to you, search in Safe mode for the file.

Pay particular attention to hibernate.

I personally, set mine like this, using XP pro.

Right click the desktop, select Properties > Screen Saver.
Screen Saver: None

Click on Power.
Power schemes, select > Home/Office Desk.
Turn off monitor : 5 minutes
Turn off hard disks: 15 minutes
System standby: Never

Click on Advanced.
Options > Both unticked.
Power Buttons.
When I press the power button on my computer > Shut down.
When I press the sleep button on my computer > Stand by.

If your computer is NOT a laptop/notebook then you can stop Hibernate.
Hibernation, reserves disk space equal to your RAM.

If you are using Internet Explorer, this is very good.
