Specs: Windows XP
Hi there :) basically what has happened is that daily scan from AVG virus programme came up with a 'trogan horse' SHeur 2ZCU on 'system2/reader-sexe

Put in virus valut, but had feeling that not the end of it. so dloadeded AVAST.
It came up with another virus -an win32 vitro.
and needed to restart to do in depth scan.
Then, it would load desktop screen but no icons no tool bar. tried over and over again when in the end managed to boot in safe mode by using f8 button.
Then ran avast again and since then nothing is starting windows, not even in safe mode - tried all options there too! what is happening now is when start pc, its going to black screen and says 'were sorry for the inconvenience, but windows did not start successfully, A recent hardware or software change may of effected this. ect ect.
And gives same options, well 5 of them ie safe mode - with network, last know good conf and start windows normally and a count down to when it will try and start normally. - if you leave it to do this or try any other option then the pc just restarts.

I really really don't want to loose some of the things on my pc.. ie pictures. I an armature photographer and haven't backed up for bout a month.. and typical, took some lovely pics last week and week b4 and some lovely ones of my son.

I have been trying to fix it.
is thre anything that can be done? :(

Hopefully this will make sense :)

Thankyou

if you have an XP install disc that is the same as yours eg: XP Home=Xp Home or Xp Pro= XP Pro
you cannot mix and match, you could do a repair install where you only lose your critical updates which you can install later:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/...
That should get you started, then try another bootscan with Avast and move all it finds to the chest.
Post back on your progress, thanx

I would ask friends, relatives and co-workers, I'm sure there will be a disc you can borrow, just be sure to have their product number that came with the disc, you will need that to do the repair install.

You can try and recover your files by removing the hard drive, connecting it to another PC as a slave or to a USB port via an inexpensive adapter cable and running a file recovery program.

The folowing are examples:

PC Inspector (freeware)
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/pcinsp...

Zero assumption Recovery
http://www.z-a-recovery.com
The demo is limited
It will only recover 'up to' four folders per run
But you can make multiple runs

GetDataBack
