Windows won't boot

My mate has this problem with his machine, all of a sudden he can't boot into Windows it goes to the Splash screen then the screen goes black and nothing. We have tried to get into safe mode but can't it wont get past multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\windows\system32\drivers\agp440.sys

We have tried last know good config, we have tried the recovery console with chkdsk/p & chkdsk/r. We are in the middle of reloading Windows to see if that does anything. I suspect hardware but he's not convinced.
