The rule of thumb for Windows Updates is to download and install ALL critical updates. The rest of the updates are a pick and choose. Read them before installing as you may not need them.

Make sure you clean your computer of spyware, ect before you install service pack 2

Sound advice from all the above. Follow it and you should be fine.

If you want to retain a local copy of the updates, then consider the procedure on my website (Homepage link) that shows you how to secure them locally to your hard drive.
Look at the section titled "Get updates for your OS from Windows Update to your Local Hard Drive".
