Windows updates usually shows a yellow shield on the taskbar that will tell you when updates are ready. I will click the shield, then choose custom install instead of express install so I can choose which updates I want to install. However, lately, I have not been given the chance to select, as the shield does not appear, and I only know that an update is available when I power down my computer. There will be an option to click on a line of text on the shut down menu that says "click here to not install updates". However, if I click the TurnOff button, it will install the updates. I don't know what happened, but I want to know what updates are being installed. Is there a way to find out what updates they are trying to install? I'm ready to just turn the whole update thing off. Any help will be appreciated. Also, I've looked on the site for similar issues with this, but have not had success. Again, thanks in advance.

I think MSoft changed how the notification works. I just periodically go to the Windows update site and choose custom. Here is the link.

You can reconfigure your automatic updates from the windows security window.
Just choose the first option that says 'Automatically install updates' then set the time to a different time and click on Apply, then change it to your preferred time again, click on Apply and then OK button.
The yellow icon show appear in the system tray.If not, you can try from what Othehill is suggesting.
