CPU/Ram: 2ghz celeron 256mb

i have just installed some critical updates from microsoft and when i rebooted i got a message saying that a generic host process for win32 services has encounted a problem and needs to close, the error report refers to something called svchost.exe, what is this and why do i have 5 of them runing at ne1 time? Also some of the previous updates with (SP2) after them have disappered from the unistall menu. Ne ideas?
