A process, wininigo, has been causing major disruption to my internet connection by making it so slow that I would be faster on a 28k modem. After a bit of searching, I found a registry key identifying it as part of windows update. My question is, what is it doing that uses up all my bandwidth (I have all the most recent updates AFAIK), and what can I do to stop it short of deleting the registry key?

Currently I simply kill the process every time the computer has to restard, but there must be a simpler way.

Nil_IQ, Check out the thread at the link below. It appears that "winingo" is some type of malware and is not the result of a Microsoft Update.

Rest assured you have more serious problems and Windows update did not steal your bandwidth.

Though I walk through the valley of Microsoft, I shall fear no OS for skills are with me

O.k, so will simply deleting the registry key stop it from starting up when the computer does? I can't find winigo.exe as a file anywhere on my system. It isn't detected by any program i've run so far.

What about msework and muamgrd? I couldn't find anywhere that said what they do, and they claim to be windows update processes as well.

Nil_IQ, The "Microsoft Update Machine" is not the Microsoft Windows Update but is some sort of malware trying to diguise itself. I would download & install Ad-aware and Spybot Search & Destroy. Update both programs then read the instructions and run them. They may get rid of that garbage.

Ad-aware

Spybot Search & Destroy

I would also update your virus definitions and run a full virus scan.
