My O/S is XP Home. In the latest Microsoft priority windows updates list , one of them is for netframework 2.0, a program which is in my system. After the usual downloading and installing, the netframework update will not install even though it shows having been downloaded. When trying to install, I get an installation error code of “0x643”. So now, not only will it not install, it tries to do so at each shutdown with the same result and shows up in the windows update history log, so I have since disabled the automatic updates option to keep this from going on and on. All of the other updates downloaded and installed with no problem. By the way, add/remove will not show this attempt as it did not install. Any and all suggestions greatly appreciated. Thanks.

if you cannot install WGA (KB892130) from Windows Update Site, in the scenario where you can download it but it fails on install, simply do this, open your My Computer icon and browse to your Local Disk C:, the files that were downloaded are in "C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download"
inside are a bunch of folders with a crapload of alphanumeric names, mine was called "C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\cd6812fef1fd3e79d9350b24a76108f1"
if this is not the same with you then i suggest looking through the folders until you locate one with "spmsg.dll" "legitcheckcontrol.dll" and a few other files as well as a folder called "Update", open the update folder and run "Update.exe" file, the install of WGA will succeed and you will be able to proceed with windows update site as normal, do the same for any other failed updates if you feel like poking around in that directory looking for relevant files.
This fix was purely by my own frustration and as a computer tech i decided to go looking for the windowsupdate download cache in the windows directory as i had already known that one existed, feel free to redistribute this information on other forums so we can help others fix these inane and stupid problems provided by our friends at Micro(Crack)soft.
I would appreciate credit for this fix, please mention my name.

Is this really your own fix or did you just plagiarized it from this article?

I have never seen this article, i am asking for credit for the fact that i found this fix by poking around in my own computer and finding this folder with the update file in it, i am not asking for credit for being the only person smart enough to look in this folder, and as a matter of fact i am sure there are others out there that have indeed found the same fix, but when i searched for information regarding the inability to install this and other updates once they downloaded from Microsoft update site i got a bunch of people telling me to download some cab file, i did this and it didnt solve the issue, so i got pissed and looked in the PC for my own answer. I was merely asking for credit if people used my text/tutorial that i typed up, not credit for the actual fix which wasnt that hard to figure out.

OK but you're the only one that insists on credit for & to use your name.
Ever since CN came into existence hundreds (if not thousand) of contributors posted fix for just about anything WITHOYT EVER ASKING TO BE CREDITED. I don't meant to be rude but I can't help thinking you are glorifying your own name.

I should have mentioned that the file is
KB917283. So I don't screw something up,
do you have any specifics for that? Thanks.

I've read that one could uninstall .netframework 2.0 then re-install and then the update will work, but I kinda hate to go that far with it.
