I'm trying to download windows updates but it won't download them. I can't use the website so that's out of the question, I'm simply using the automatic updates feature. The windows update icon appears but it them dissappears again minutes later, no progress is indicated. The first time it ran it quoted that 460mb of updates were available, but it didn't bother to download them. I haven't been able to find any information on this problem on google or microsoft.com.

My first question, is why can't you use the web site? Is it a connectivity issue? If it is, that could be what is causing the problem.
If not that, do you have at least Service Pack 1? Microsoft recently announced that Windows Update won't be providing updates unless you have SP1 or SP2 installed.

I tend to agree that whatever is keeping you from using the website is the same problem you have using Windows Update.
If the problem is related to a validation issue then you can still get some of the updates.
