Well, I thought everything was running smoothly til I tried running Windows Update a few days ago. I got to the site, but the scan stopped at 0% & stayed there. I tried several system restores without success and the MS knowledge base has no info on this problem at all. Thanx in advance for any help on this one.

I would like to than Richard for his response. Unchecking the Automatically detect proxy setting solved my problem.
Thanks!

Your'e the man, richard ! That worked for me as well. The system properties box still shows Windows Update as not available, but it works fine. Thanx.

Hmm. that solution does not seem to work for me. I checked and had none of the boxes checked in the window you refer to. Is there anything else that you're aware of that could be the cause of this problem? Thanks.

I'm having the same problem but I don't have anything checked in my LAN connections box. Wonder if Microsoft is checking duplicate CD Keys... not that I have one =)
Like anthony, I had nothing checked in LAN settings. Solution didn't work for me. All official and legal versions of Windows. Problem started after Win XP Service Pack 1 completed succesfully.
