Subject: Windows Update Fail!OS: Windows XP Home sp2CPU/Ram: Intel Celeron 2.8 512 MBModel/Manufacturer: HP Pavillion a404x |
Comment: I just ran a full format and recovery from the recovery partition. I turned on Windows Update and they fail to install. The 1st 2 updates after SP2 Update for Windows XP (KB898461) Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1 Im not sure what to do I have turned off all AV programs i even uninstalled the AVG i got still no luck. The updates download but will not install. If i go to Windows Update they fail there also. On the Windows Update there is one more that want install Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130) Why would the Genuine Advantage tool not install? The Windows XP in this system is legit because it came from HP. Could there be a service running in HP computers that may block the updates? I have no problem with my other systems All are connected to the same router WRT54G.

Reply: (edit)I just ran a full format and recovery from the recovery partition. You don't run the recovery from the recovery partition. You have to run it from the recovery cds that you were prompted to create the very first time you turned on this desktop. I have been doing this on various machines over the years and in all that time I never had problems either with WGA and/or Windows update site itself. i_Xp/VistaUser

Reply: (edit)You hit the F10 key on boot up. It goese to the recovery partition. No CD'S came with the computer. This is my churches computer im doing work for the church and i got everything that was with the computer in a box they gave me. Again there are NO CD'S its on the recovery partition. I saw on HP'S website where i can order the CD'S but i got the partition. Also i saw in the start menue where i can make the CD'S. The CD'S are made from the image in the recovery partition. Look here http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/... It plainly shows you don't need CD'S.

Reply: (edit) spupdsvc.exe may be causing the issue. Did a quick search and saw some users reporting that this is the case for Security Patch KB898461 Try restarting the computer.During the restart press F8 and choose the safe mode option. Once in safe mode navigate to
C:\WINDOWS\system32\spupdsvc.exe Rename the file to spupdsvcOLD.exe Reboot the computer and manually install the security patch. Hope this helps.

Reply: (edit)Updates still want install. Sometimes when i turn the computer off it saids it has updates it needs to install. I dought they install because it want even install the Windows installer update. I tell you what. I hate HP computers. Now im haveing to unplug the keyboard and plug it back in for it to work. And yes the keyboard is good. Its just that HP'S are so propritary they only like HP hardware. Anyway i renamed the file and no luck. How do i delete what auto updates downloaded and start it all over? That may work.

Reply: (edit)"You should be able to remove the installed updates from Add & Remove programs." Im not talking about installed updates. Im talking about downloaded updates that DO NOT install. There is a folder somewhere that saves the downloaded updates.
