Windows System32 Config System Error

Microsoft Windows xp home edition sp2b
October 7, 2009 at 06:30:27
Specs: Windows XP
Went to use our computer, usually on standby, and received the following message:
windows/system32/config/system
Tried to reboot, tried to start from last confirmed configuration..yada...yada and nothing seems to work. Can't find the XP disc to run set-up again and worried about finding anyway bcuz I've read sometimes everything is lost. I know, back-up, back-up, but didn't...so, where do I go from here?
