I just re-installed Windows ME and it worked fine for about 24 hours. Today I was using it and the computer just shut off. I turned it back on and when Windows would load it would shut down. I tried this about 3 more times and decided to reformat the hard drive and reinstall Windows again. I had the hard drive formatted and I tried using a Windows ME startup disk and DOS would start to load and the computer would just shut down. I then tried to boot using the Windows XP CD, and when it would start up, the computer would still shut down. Any ideas what could be causing this?

Only that ME is notoriously rotten. If you have XP, why install ME and screw everything up?? Of course you may have multiple other problems.

Sorry. Misunderstood. Thought you said you installed ME and the computer shut down. If it's XP shutting it down -- are you sure -- then I assume you've checked for viruses, spyware, etc. But I guess you can't do that if you can't get in to Windows in the first place.

What I don't think I understand is that if you reformat and install, why you use the ME disk. Why not just reinstall XP with the XP CDs?

When you can, run you AV program, download AdAware and Spybot, install them, update them, and run. Delete anything that looks suspicious. Some advise deleting everything because it's all reversible. Also get Spyblaster which keeps a list of bad stuff on your computer and blocks them from being installed (theoretically). Be sure your independent (not MS’s) firewall is enabled.

Good luck.

Thanks, ill try that when i get it working.

What happened was I bought a new motherboard and processor and installed them. I wanted to start with a fresh hard drive too, so i formatted the drive and attempted to install XP. The system would boot from the XP disk, but when the option to hit enter to install new or press r to repair came up the computer would just shut itself down. I decided to use Windows ME to set the computer up and then install XP, but the computer shut down and ME would not start, safe mode would not start, the ME CD would not start, the XP CD would not start and the ME start up disk would not start. They all shut my computer off.

Wild guess. Booting to the command prompt and going to the CD drive. Would that help?

I tried that with the Windows ME boot disk and it shuts the computer down. I got into the command prompt once and tried to install ME and the setup started, but then it immediately shut down again.
