I try to install service pack 2, then it goes to the Windows Service Pack 2 settup wizard, gets to performing inventory, a service pack 2 settup error comes up saying "The file c:\windows\system32\ftp.exe open or in use by another application. Close all other applications then click retry."
What should I do?

If you go to Start, Run... type services.msc and click ok. Look to see if FTP Publishing service is running and if it is right click and stop it. You might also have to stop IIS Admin service, and World Wide Web Publishing service depending if you have those components installed.
I like long walks, especially when they are taken by people who annoy me.

Thanks for the quick responses, Ill have to try them later, I am about to leave my house. I appreciate it though.

Ok I did what you told me to do, but I went to that services.msc and I had none of those things you listed running. What should I try next?

Ok ftp.exe is the ftp client not the ftp server, you might open task manager and click on the processes tab and see if it is running in there, if it is, end the process. Maybe you could try Going to Start, Run... Typing in C:\Windows\system32\ftp.exe hitting ok and then typing bye at the prompt and hitting enter. Hope one of these puts you in the right direction.

ftp.exe wasn't under the processes tab, and I tried start, running it, but nothing happened. I had to do a system restore recently, so I had to download and install all of the microsoft updates and stuff again. Everything went fine until I got to service pack 2, then this :\
I also tried doing a search for the problem all over the internet and couldn't find a solution.

I fixed the problem. I changed the name of ftp and I installed service pack 2 fine. I then copied ftp from i386 to system32 folder. So yeah, all worked out :)
