Windows re-instal gone wrong

OS: Windows XP Pro
CPU/Ram: 2,7 GHz Celeron, 1 GB RAM
Manufacturer/Model: Intel
Comment:

I have two disks on my machine.
My OS (Windows XP Pro) was on the larger disk, where I kept part of my important data as well.
At one point something happened and some of the functions of the OS became problematic, so I decided to re-install Windows.

Problem was that the Windows re-installation process always stops at "Installing Network, 32 minutes remaining".
It can't re-install the network, apparently and the re-install process stops there.

I installed a fresh copy of Windows XP Pro on my other hard drive and now I can see all the data on the messed up HDD.

Is there a way to fix the bad re-installation on the other drive through the Windows that I am running from my smaller drive?

If you can still see all the data on the old large hard drive then it sounds like it wasn't formatted to do a clean install.

Did you boot from the cd or start the cd when windows was running.

If all your information is still on the hard drive I would try a repair install.

A good article can be found at..

If you want a clean install boot off the cd and format the hard drive. Do not use the quick format as it does not check for errors.

You could also use the hard drive manufactures software to clone your new installation on the smaller drive to the bigger drive...and then change the jumpers back.

Hope this is of some help.

Hi, yes, I was trying to do a repair re-instal. Not a completely fresh re-instal.

I wanted to preserve the rest of the data on the large drive and to revive its flawed Windows.

Unfortunately, the repair re-instal stops at "Installing Network, 32 minutes remaining" and that's it.

Is there a way to finish this interrupted repair re-instal, taking advantage of the fact that I have a working Windows on my other hard drive?

Select the option to not connect to a network during the install.

^ How do I do that?
I have never seen a prompt asking me not to connect to the network while installing.

Hi,

when I have to run fresh installs I just format my HD. I know it's not what your doing but it will give your computer a clean bill of health.

If you get a portable HD drive you can use that for backup use. For 100GB it don't cost allot if you shop smart.

What happen to the computer that caused this problem in the frist place?
