Perhaps this will help keep someone else from pulling their hair out!! Rebuilding XP on Dell Dimension 4400 when I started getting this message at boot up "One of the files containg system registry data had to be recovered by use of...." after updating via windows update. Did some uninstalling and started over. Found the Nvida video driver update causing the problem. It was nv4_disp.dll ver. 6.14.10.5673. Restored to original ver. and it took care of problem. System restore does help at these times!

Don't forget to stop and smell the roses!
That might be why everyone say not to update your device drivers at Windows Update. Better to do it at the devices website.
