Hi any help appreciated-
Problem-
after switching on and the machine has fully booted, windows loads etc, all fine, but if I leave the computer on and shoot off to do other things, after some time the screen goes blue and the following message is shown..
A problem has been detected and windows has shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. if this screen apperas again follow these steps:
Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is indentified in the stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates. try changingvideo adaptors.Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates, Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Setup options and then select safe mode.
***STOP: 0x0000008E (0xC0000005, 0x8050D110, 0xF913435C, 0x000000000)
Beginning dump of physical memory.

Firstly i can't seem to get into safe mode and am reticent about fiddling with any of the other options until i seek some advice.
Anyone help please.

Please give us a detailed list of your system hardware. Also, RAM and processor speed. Size of hard disk drives, video card, soundcard, etc.

How long have you had XP on your system? Was the sytem functioning properly at any point in time?

Have you taken the time to get "all" xp driver updates from the various hardware manufacturers.

Give us enough information to be able to help! By all means get back with the answers. Not insurmountable to correct problems you are having.

ok first thing to do is boot up using the Win XP cd.....go right to the end and say yes to go into command console mode. When in this mode type "chkdsk /r" and let it runs its course. After this has finished boot up normally and you SHOULD be able to go into windows again. Now this is ONLY a fix, cause ive had the UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME error before(just another stop error like yours) and i fixed it using the above. Sorry but i dont know how to stop this for good though. Although the MS website has heaps of info on stop errors (i think i saw the 8E one there also). So do the above, go to the MS website and see if your error appears and then follow what they say to fix the problem. Good luck :-)

I have the same sets of various error BSODs. I've got new drivers, re-installing WinXP and
tested RAM, etc and all that is suggested here.

What I finally think it bolis down to and is my solution is that the virtual memory file is corrupted (pagefile.sys). Also, for me if I set too high at 766MB as recommended, I still get the BSOD once in a while. So, what do I suggest you do ?

(1) Erase pagefile.sys by setting it to zero,
(2) After erasing, set to 256MB (min) and 512MB(Max). It works
for me; I have 512 DDR RAM.

Now, I've running 3-4 days error free.

Your choice to make !
