Windows not shutting down

Specs: Windows XP Professional, P 4 2.26GHz
My PC is not shutting down. The screen shows "Windows is shutting down, please wait...." but not happens. Then I have to manually switch it off. Can any one tell me the reason & what should I do? I'm using Windows XP Professional (SP2)

A couple of thoughts....

A virus running in the back ground can cause it to hang.
A corrupt registry can cause it as well.

Run your anti spy...virus programs and try a free registry cleaner.

Did this problem just start?

Thanks for the quick response. I guess this problem happened after installing a printer driver-for HP laser jet1020. But surprisingly, one day, windows was properly shut down, but only for one time. Then the next time it failed and continued to date. I tried a free registry cleaner also but failed.

I'm using AVG free antivirus 2011. Can you tell me good free anti spyware software for this purpose?

sanaka, I sorta disagree with worldlibrary. I agree that some sort of nasty is possible, but doubtful IMHO. There're several cleaners around designed specifically for trojans (similar to, but not same as a virus). Malware Bytes (Google for location) seems to be the preferred remover, but I've run into a few it couldn't handle. Superantispyware seems able to handle all comers. (Info only. I’m not paid for recommendation. WARNING! FYI, a full scan on mine takes over an hour.) can do the job and you can get it free @:
among other places.
Rather, I suspect Windows itself. FWIW, Windows seems to have been plagued with shutdown problems of one sort or another since day 1. I use a standalone shutdown proggie (for convenience) called 'Slawdog' (said to work on all versions, I run XP 3 ). Get it free @:
among other places. Works good and I drag/dropped the icon into my quick launch so it'd be handy for use.

It sounds like you may have already found the culprit.......HP laser jet1020

You might try disabling it at start up and see if the shutdown problem goes away.

I normally don't recommend software.....however I use "Win Patrol" for stopping programs at start up......It allows me to stop a program and then if wanted at a later time undo it.
