Specs: Windows XP Profesional Service pack 2
When the computer loads up only the background picture shows.
After control alt delete I can access the programs.
When trying to repair with xp cd it ask for a lot of files I do not have
Set up cannot copy the file migregdb,exe_.
and than a whole list setup can not copy : icwconnl.ex_
icwhelp.dll ..........................on and on about 20 files like that.
The computer seems normal after first start up, but after it is not showing the desktop again.
Where can I get the files missing, and would that help?

versha, a couple of things spring to mind. First is a worm/trojan. I'd scan first just 'cuz. Be aware that a virus and a Trojan are similar, but not the same. Many times, an AV detects one it can't clean, other times, it gets missed entirely.
If you need to clean one, Superantispyware (info only. I’m not paid for recommendation) can do the job and you can get it free @:
among other places. They have a Vista compatible version if needed Dunno about Windows 7..
If it turns out that you need to use it, be sure to update Superantispyware prior to running and disable 'restore' (restart after cleaning) so the nasty doesn't get put back. They just released a new update recently and it changes all the time. Things are in a constant state of flux.
The restore thing is critical. May not be your deal at all, but won't hurt anything to try.
Next, if that doesn't work, is file association. Perhaps the wrong thing is trying to open them? IE can open most things, but I've had to go down the list trying each thing one by one 'till I located a winner. Another 'maybe' is 'what opens what' @:
