If you are comfortable editing the registry: Create a Restore point and back up the registry.Open regedit. Look for;
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\CurrentControlSet\SetControlClass. Key name: {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} Value Data:[Delete all value data from upper and lower filters] Note-Do not delete the key or the multi-string values. Delete only the data values. Exit regedit and reboot.

hmm... checking the registry and there's no SetControlClass in the CurrentControlSet section. or is SetControlClass an option? i'm not all that familiar with regedit, i'd be really appreciative if you could explain it in "regedit for dummies" language :)

No offense meant. Try control panel-system-cd and dvd players and delete the entries and reboot.

Disconnect drive/s from motherboard completely, reboot (without drives)to windows. Then shut down without. Reconnect drives then reboot WITH (drives connected)... windows should re detect the drives and install drivers needed...
Hope this helps
