Comment:

I can't get Windows Messenger to stop running. Whenever I right click it on the taskbar and click exit I'm told that running applications are using it--even if I'm not running anything. I can't uninstall it either. How do I get rid of it?

Let it start up... and then, click on options. One of the choices will be 'start with Windows'... unselect that. reboot.

A favourite program of mine is called 'End it All' or 'End it All 2' which you can find and download from google. This shows you which programs are running....and will allow you to close them so therefore if you need to, install this program, close one called sumthing like msnmgr and then go to add/remove programs and them add/remove windows components. that should get rid of it 4 u if u want it to.

If you disable Windows messenger and still need the facility download MSN Messenger 6 which only links to your Hotmail Account and is standalone so can stop and start at will.

Ik heb Windows messenger 4.7 zonder problemen kunnen verwijderen van het systeem
Start---->uitvoeren en daar zet je dit in
RUNDLL32.EXE ADVPACK.DLL,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\MSMSGS.INF,BLC.Remove

Simpel. Daarna kan je MSN 6.0 installeren als je dat wilt

Firstly you need to disable messenger as a service in Administrative Tools in Control Panel. Other things that keep it running unnecessarily are:
1. In outlook express, under Tools, Options, uncheck "Automatically log onto Windows Messenger".
2. In Messenger under Tools, Options, Preferences, uncheck "Allow this program to run in the backgorund"
3. In outlook express, under View,Layout, uncheck "Contacts"
4. Finally, if you're running Norton Antivirus 2003 in Options, Instant Messenger, uncheck MSN Instant Messenger.

Windows messenger service has nuttin to do with MSN messenger.

One is a chat prog, the other a service that enables use of the TCP/IP 'netsend' network utility (this is the service u want to close to stop those 'buy me and stop me' messenger spam popups).

You won't find Win messenger on the taskbar/system tray, so it must be MSN messenger that's being referred to here !!
