after i installed the service pack 1 for winxp when i click on windows messenger it takes ages to load up. why and any way to fix it?
also one other thing i've noticed is the computer during startup seems to make a funny noise for a while. this was not the case before sp1 although apart from these two things it works fine.

Not quite sure, but is messanger part of Windows or Internet Explorer. Reason is because Internet Explorer also has a service pack out. Maybe try and install that and see what happens.

Morning,
Uninstall that damn SP-1 and hope your computer straightens out.
There are soooooo many problems with SP-1 as you could tell by redaing other posts in the Forum.
Wait till MS fixes the fix then try SP-1/2/3/whatever. Over time they might get it right. Might take a while.
just my opinion,

Everyone is so quick to uninstall the SP1. The thing is if you dont do it in a certain way you'll be worse off. Try going to windows updates and checking for any other updates that have to do with IE or Messenger. I have messenger and SP1 and they both have no problems. Just dont give up and uninstall SP1 until you are absolutely positive you must, else you might regret it. Sometimes going to the Windows XP support page at Microsoft.com helps.

i wont uninstall sp1 as it has a VERY important security patch. microsoft tried to be clever by having it in the sp1 therefore i'd advise xp users to keep it until sp2. microsoft the bas****s.
anyway after sp1 the pc seems stable although i've got the the problem with messenger because it takes years to load.

Jan, go here and download the messanger update.

Hope this solves your problem.

Morning,
The secirity patch referred to can be fixed in about 30 seconds by going to
www.grc.com
Steve Gibson has a simple program (about 30 kbytes) that fixes the security hole.
Also you can check your computer firewall for free there.
Give it a look,

I find it loads quicker now that I've turned off the file Indexing service (under the general properties of you C: drive). You don't really need the feature unless you spend a lot of time looking for files.

If you REALLY want to speed up your computer, uninstall windoze altogether. The whole bloddy thing is a security hole. MS isn't exactly clever when it comes to fixing things, or making stuff that works in the first place, for that matter. If you want a REAL OS, install Linux. It is absolutely free (Windoze XP Pro goes for a couple hundred dollars per copy) and not to mention the stability. And if you happen to find a bug (which has never happened in the history of the world) it is open source, so you can just fix it yourself. And you can still run all of your windoze programs too! But if you don't want to go the Linux road, try buying a mac. My mac with 4MB of RAM went 20 times faster than my PeeCee with 80MB of RAM did with windoze installed. You can pick up a used mac pretty cheap from e-bay.
