CPU/Ram: P4 2.8C Ghz/ 512

I recently got high speed internet. I dont know if this started before or after the fact because i would never be able to use this before. In some cases when trying to stream media, I get this message:
"Windows Media Player cannot play the file because the specified protocol is not supported. In the Open URL dialog, try opening the file using a different transport protocol (for example, "http:" or "rtsp:")." Ive got all the protocals checked and on automatic. Ive downloaded the codec packages from Microsoft as seen in other posts. What else is there?

What else is there? There's VLC. It's better.
