Wmp will not detect my cd-rw drive. roxio and the comptuer both work with it fine. when i start wmp it gives me a error stating no burning device found. i go to options and devices and it shows both my cd drives, but it won't burn. roxio burns, nero burns, no hardware conflicts. help!!! im a experienced tech and i know re-installing would solve this, but maybe someone has a quick fix that i don't know about. Re-installing did not work.

hi, i know you say you are expierenced in IT, but believe me i aint so just something i found with my pc, i have a dell laptop and the default burning program is roxio which came with the machine from dell, but somebody also suggested nero is good too, so i got a copy, the more variety the better eh, but nero went beserk when i was installing it saying that the program would not work properly with another burning program on the machine. and it was right it didnt, so just a suggestion, maybe different burning programs, or sorry certain burning prgrams dont work on the same machine together.

I think wmp uses the imapi cd burning com service for burning. you have to activate it in the services:

%SystemRoot%\system32\services.msc /s

the problem is also that the imapi cd burning engine belongs to roxio and is licensed by Microsoft. meaning, if you install roxio products and install directcd included for example with easy cd creator or winoncd it will overwrite the original files and screw the entire imapi service. if you uninstall directcd, imapi service will be gone too. if imapi is gone, windows components (windows explorer, wmp) won't recognise your cdrw drives. even if you force them to recognise them by hacking the registry, they will still refuse to burn, because the imapi files are missing. nero and roxio and whatever else of course still work, but they use their own drivers, so that's a different matter.

so try to activate the imapi service in the services. if it doesn't work - try to reinstall directcd, maybe it will reactivate the imapi service

Thanks for the help. i finally got it working. my roomate had gone into services and for some reason turned off the darn imapi cd-rom burning service.

php: your idea made a light go off in my head. i should of thought about that before, but i knew i hadn't messed with that. thanks

conskee: i do use other burning services. i.e. roxio and nero. i have been using all three for a long time. both roxio and nero were working fine, it was just wmp. i like wmp to burn mp3's. i use nero for iso's and rar's and making dvd's. i use roxio for backing up.

thanks for all of your help.
