You might not have the codec thats needed to play the video... Try downloading them from Microsoft.

thank you for replying so quickly but i downloaded the codecs and it still doesnt show the video on any files i play, just the sound
my misses is gonna bash me soon if she cant watch her films lol

The only other thing i can think of then is to downlaod and install Widnows Media Player 10 (if you havent already)

Do a Google search for free DVD player. Download and try your DVD in one of them, see if it plays.
