If you don't have a DVD player, then you can't play DVD discs.

Kurt, please read carefully:

I want to play DVD files from hard disk!

(so the question was - why I can't play DVD (rip) files FROM HARD DISK, if I do not have DVD device in computer - BUT I CAN PLAY dvd files FROM *HARD* (not from dvd-device) if I have DVD-device in computer (allthou I do not play DVD media) Uhhhhhh.

I wonder is it possible that Microsoft make so kind of -hm- mistake - that Media Player the first looks if there is DVD-device in computer, then bla, bla... you know.

Ende.
