Subject says it all...

Double-clicking on a file, the sand glass appears for a couple seconds, then nothing.

I've tried ENTER on the file...
I've tried Open with WMP...
Also tried to get it in the Open With list...
I've tried opening the player first...
I've opening directly in the Program Folder...
I've loooked in my Task Manager. Nothing there...
I've rebooted... to no avail.

AVI, MPG, MPEG, WMV, ASF... anything associated with Windows Media Player will not work, will not open.

What the hell is wrong?

I've heard a worm can cause this, not entierly sure, but go HERE and check just to be sure.

Oh, and this might prove interesting: in the Windows Media Player's folder, the wmplayer.exe file as an "unknown" type of icon.. I don't think that's right, is it?

And the Modified date is like yesterday.. this also doesn't seem right.

I'll try reinstalling it...

Well... I've reinstalled the Player.

It seems to work fine now. The icon as gone back to the usual WMP icon... but as I've said, solving isn't enough for me. I wanna know what happened and why.

As I write this, I'm scanning via HouseCall as suggested above.. and It already has found two viruses!... Damn it!

Named JAVA FEMAD.B and JAVA BYTEVER.A-1
Can anyone tell me more about them?
Are they related to the prob I had?
If so, how did I get them?
And why did it targetted WMV?
My friend seams to have the same prob as me right now, but with Norton. Could it be the same virus thing?

Tap their names into Google.com for more information.

More than likely they ARE related to the problem you are having, more investigation on Google should shed some light on it.

Have you shared any s/ware with your friend recently? these worms can also be installed by "Cool Web Search"..........

Well... the scan went pretty well...
Got a third one, named VBS_BALALA.A

I've tried getting some info abuot them viruses on Norton's web site. Nothin could be found. ???? Pretty dumb for the #1 Anti-Virus company...Anyways...

Made the search on Google and it got me on Sophos. Didn't get much info except that the first two were Trojans and that the second one was an alisa of the first...

Didn't find anything about my third one..?

Anyway, don't know if it's related to the bug I had, but probably.

I'll try to check a bit more. Last post here.

Thanks for the link Hooner!

PS: nope, didn't share any software. I'm pretty clean on my compu normally. Rarely got into any trouble.. except the time I came in here in agony because I had lost ALL filetype associations... God was I stupid that time I typed "Y" to the question "Do you want to delete the registry values?" What was I thinking...
