Windows Media Player streaming erro

For the past month or so I've been receiving the following error when attempting to play streaming .wmv files:
"Windows Media Player cannot play the file because a network error occurred." I also receive an "A network cable is unplugged" error despite the fact that my cables are all fine (I ONLY get that error when on a site that streams .wmv files) and I am disconnected from my connection for about a minute.
There are two things that are probably the cause of this problem, but I don't know how I'd be able to fix it. I recently updated Windows Media Player to the newest version (although I temporarily downgraded to the second most recent version and I still got the error) and I purchased a new wireless router (Netgear WGR614 v7).

SleepDeprived, pure SWAG, suspect you're being victimized by your router firewall. Take a look at settings for it and be sure you've granted the proper permissions. HTH. Ed in Texas.
