Wow, never heard of that happening. Maybe while it was installing drivers it somehow interacted with other driver/ config/ or registry in windows xp.

I had the same problem (lost all my desk- top icons and task bar) when installing service pack 1 through windows update. I had to turn my computer off and on three times manually before my desktop returned to normal. I'm curious to know if you downloaded wmp9 through windows update site?

Yes I went to windows update site to dl wmp9....first time i ever had that problem with their updates...i got them all cept few of the optional ones like directx9, the fax one, wireless fidelity whatever....they dont apply to me and i hear of too much problems with the direct x upgrade...
It wasnt just desktop affected...was system wide. I tried getting to various files & folders etc. from the start menu also, also the start> run....nothing worked but when i used last known good...all was ok and still got wmp9. Also as recommended by M$ to turn off other running prog such as av and so on...I did that too...just the background M$ stuff running that is needed to run puter and be online...the only extra prog i usually run is av, zone alarm pro, visual zone, msn mess, belkin (ups prog). shut all off cept ups prog. I got no prompt to reboot but did anyway cus its faster to reboot to restart the other prog than to restart each one manually.
I still havn't found any info at M$ site or anywhere else for that matter....sent few of the error reports to M$...maybe new bug
