Hello,
I attempted to install Win XP and had to abort and revert back to Win ME. The Windows Media player now shows with a different logo and is version 8, which apparently is not compatible with Win Me. So then I downloaded and attempted to install the full version of the Windows Media Player 7.1 and get the following error message:

"Setup has detected that you are running an older operating system. Windows Media Player 8 is supported on Windows Whistler."

There is no option in the add/remove programs in the control panel to uninstall Windows Media Player 8 and there is also no uninstall file found within any of the subfolders. Any help with this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
Kristina

You could try the following:
select cleanup from the rightclick mouse menu form ´my computer´
Choose to add/remove windows elements and go to multimedia elements.
Hopefully there´s mediaplayer. Select is and click OK.
Since MediaPlayer is integrated within Windows you can´t uninstall it using the regular add/remove option in the control panel.
You have to use this add/remove option on Windos elements.

From Disk Cleanup I accessed my Windows Components &
removed Media Player from the Multimedia section of
Windows Setup. The Media Player in Windows Setup
appears to be only 0.2 megs whereas the Media Player
7.1 installation file is more like 10 megs in size.
Regardless, this did NOT solve the problem. I tried to
reinstall all components of Media Player 7.1 over
version 8 (which default installed with my aborted
attempt to upgrade from Win ME to XP). The 7.1
installation gives me the following message:

Error Starting Program

The DLIMPORT.exe file is linked to a missing export
ADVAPI32.DLL:ConvertStringSecurityDescriptor
ToSecurityDescriptorW.

How can I get Media Player (7.1) to function on my
Windows ME machine again?

In WinXp you can use an older version of Windows Media payer by going to the run command box and typing in mplayer2.I am not sure if you can do this with WinMe but it might be worth a try

You could try to do thesame what you did to uninstall but now choose to install.

Windows has to be able to add/remove elements.
The problem indeed was that somehow your ´reverting to ME´ left WM8 on the system?
What do you mean exactly buy ´reverting´?
Did you format or installed ME over XP (if that is possibe anyway)

I was able to do an undo, however the partial installation of XP left some permanent changes on the computer, including WM8.
