In the past I have had no problem playing video files on my Windows Media player 10. Now, all of a sudden I cannot see the video but I can hear the sound. Can anyone please tell me what might be wrong and what I should do to get the picture back. I have tried several videos and they are all the same - sound but no picture. Thanks

Is the "mute" button pushed in?

Does your CPU really clock at 120GHz?

Thanks for the above. I have downloaded and installed the K-Lite pack but I still do not get a video picture. The sound is working OK. Any other suggestions please?

By the way, sorry about the CPU - should be 1.2 of course.

Thanks

Install the new version 11 and see if that helps.

Thanks for the above replies.
I think I will give Gom a miss!

Mattie Not sure I understand all the Microsoft link but isn't that a defense against future problems (very wise) rather than a cure for my current problems?

fermanagh1976 I already had VLC installed but now that is the same as Media player and Real Player - sound only, no picture.

I thought of uninstalling Meadia player, Real player and VLC & installing them all again but I cannot find any mention of Media player in the Control Panel add and remove. Does anyone know if it is , or should be in the control panel? It is, of course in my Program Files.

Any other help anyone can give will be very welcome.
Thanks

wombat, thanks for sharing this certainly valuable information. it sure as hell would be even more valuable if you only could prove it.

however, none of my research dug up any hints about malicious code or spyware included in GOMplayer. instead i found this:

"Softpedia guarantees that Gom Player 2.0.11.3373 is 100% CLEAN, which means it does not contain any form of malware, including but not limited to: spyware, viruses, trojans and backdoors."

... and the program is rated with 5 out of 5

http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multim...

p.s.: my firewall popped up when i started GOMplayer , requesting internet access, but that came to an abrupt halt when i disabled 'check for updates'

Noel, never mind that MSKB link. this was ment for Wombat who obviously needs troubleshooting with his DEP settings.

noel, u can uninstall XMP from the add/remove programs,

on the left panel, you should see a button called add/remove windows components. when it opens, scroll down to WMP and uncheck the box

leave everything else untouched. then click ok

it should uninstall WMP. after that delete the Program Files Folder.

Guess what? same things happening to me! no video or viz, but sound is fine, happened after i ran RegSeeker, and Advanced Disk Cleaner, did u do any registry cleaning or disk cleaning?

akdog Thanks . I will try that although I am a bit wary of deleting the WMP file in the Program Files in case I delete anything which is common to and used by another program. I suppose I should be OK if I create a restore point before I start. No I haven't messed with my Registry, not that I know of anyway!

Thanks for the above. I have spent ages on this problem and got nowhere! I cannot delete or cut & paste the WMP folder or its contents from the Program Files folder. It tells me that it is being used by another person or program although as far as I am aware it is not. I have tried to install WMP10 and get this message

"This version of Windows Media Technologies is
incompatible with this version of Windows.
For more information, view the information
at the Microsoft web site."

I can install WMP11 OK but have the same problem - video sound but no picture. However unlike WMP10, at least WMP11 shows up in the Add & Remove.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled my VLC player and now that does not work at all!
I have really hit a brick wall so if anyone can help I would be very grateful.

Hi, I have been following your post. I am in no way an expert, but have been down this road before. Did these particular vids ever play correctly before? If so what player were you using? I remember downloading something called "Sherlock codec detective" at one time. If I remember right it tells you what the codec your vid needs. Don't hold me to this. Google for it and try. I think I may have gotten it at Major geeks.com. Another thing I seem to remember is if the title shows up in red in the upper right corner you can click on it and it will tell you which codec is used. I have wmp 9 on one machine and wmp 10 on the other so I could be getting them mixed up. But food for thought. If these vids never did play correctly, you may want to try Divix codecs. Codecs only not the player. Your symptom does sound like a codec problem. Any way to try them in another machine? Worth a shot. Bluejay

Thanks Bluejay. I have just seen your post but have not yet done anything along the lines you suggest. However, the plot thickens: Here is an update:
Windows Media Player does not show up in the Add & Remove. I am unable to delete the WMP
file in my Programs Folder - I get the message that the program is being used elsewhere.
2. I have deleted VLC and Real player.
3. 99% of the time during the past couple of days I have not been able to get any sound or picture when I play a video in WMP although something is happening as the progress bar moves across the screen. However, once today & once yesterday I managed to play 3 videos
(sound and picture)!! All very odd. If anyone has any ideas having read this update I would be very grateful for some more advice.
