I have just purchased a second hand laptop which came with XP pre-installed. On top of this I have installed Windows Media Player 11 to enable me to watch live streaming and certain files. I have downloaded a .wmv file which plays on my main PC but won't play on my laptop and also I'm unable to live stream. All the advice points to WMP 11 because it allegedly has all the required codecs. But obviously something is wrong somewhere. I also have problems viewing certain websites correctly, I keep getting the "done but with errors on page" message on sites I don't have a problem with on my main pc.

why not try VLC player and see if that works Sounds like you may not 'allegedly' have the proper drivers installed....are there any error messages? Also don't forget, it is a used laptop and there may be things corrupt in the OS. You can probably try an sfc /scannow if you have the proper disc to reload any windows components that might be faulty.
