windows media cannot play dvd

July 8, 2009 at 12:57:37
Specs: Windows XP, P4/512
I reinstalled windows on a buddies computer,
genuine copy, sp3. Also installed new dvd
burner, never had one before. Installed driver
that came with it. Now when he goes to watch
a dvd gets error message. "windows media
cannot play this dvd because a compatible dvd
decoder is not installed on computer".
I assume i need certain codecs? But how do i
know which one? I did some reading and
people say, just use a different player, but he
wants to use media player. Any help would be
appreciated.
thanks.

You don't need just codecs, you need a program to actually play the DVD (XP's crappy Media Player doesn't do that natively, so your friend needs to try something new anyway). Here's 2 of the better (free) ones (and both come with the codecs):

ok, thanks for the quick response, i didnt know about this
problem with media player, seems ridiculous that microsoft
would charge for decoder pack to watch dvd's in media player.
