Hello!

I have a HP 9010T laptop dv9000 series which came with pre-loaded windows xp
media center. My windows is updated. I have also created the laptop recovery
discs which i have used a couple of times whenever i required.

Recently i somehow got hit by Wsaupdater.exe spyware which i suppose changed
my userinit.exe in the registry to Wsaupdater.exe
(source:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/892893/en-us). i am trying to follow
the resolution given in the mentioned article. But as i do not have any
installation CD with me i am unable to run the recovery console. I DONOT want
to reformat my drive as i have data onto it.

I borrowed a friend's windows XP installation disk just to try and get the
file exchanged through recovery console. On the first attempt it detected my
USB harddrive as the primary windows disk which is not right. I disconnected
the USB disc and tried again. It says recovery console can't find HardDisk so
won't start .

Kindly help me in this situation i do not want to format the drive as there
is valuable data onto it. Kindly provide me with a solution

I would be highly obliged if someone could please help me.

Thank you in advance.

You got infected because your defense systems are not up to scratch, far better to stop infections before they get on your comp.

Safest way now is to slave your HD to another HD/comp ( no need to bolt it in, just cable it & leave it outside the case )

Clean up the infections via the master comp & then copy your stuff ( don't forget your emails & address book ) onto the other HD or other media.
You may have a choice of jumper settings on the master HD, such as master with slave or ms.
