I just re-installed Windows XP and plugged in my microsoft optical USB mouse (the driver IS included with Windows XP). The new hardware icon appeared in the notification area telling me it had found a Microsoft USB optical mouse, but the mouse didn't begin to work. So I went to the device manager and tried updating the driver automatically. Windows was unable to find the driver, so I went back and chose "Don't search. I will choose the driver to install". This gives a list of all the device drivers that came with Windows XP. Every single category (Batteries, Display Adapter, Computer, etc.) contained no drivers. Instead, it gave me the message "Unable to find any drivers for this device". How do I get my drivers back? Help!!

update: When I tell it to search C:\windows\inf for the drivers, it finds them, but how do I make that folder the default? Also, it takes considerably longer to install new hardware this way, compared to the way windows XP is supposed to automatically install it. Any suggestions?
