After performing a repair install of windows things looked fine. Upon restart, when windows arriveed at the blue screen and it says "Windows is starting up", but before the users show up and you can enter the passwords, the comp freezes or something. If you leave it on, the monitor goes blank after about 15 minutes, then when you move the mouse, its at the login/passwords screen and things are able to work. What is the problem here? Note: The same occurs in safe mode.

How about modifying your boot.ini file as follows "multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn /sos". You will note that I have only added /sos at the end of the line in the file. When the computer is booted you will get a listing of files that are loading. .dll and others. If it hangs make note of the file that it hangs on and this will help you in discovering why it is hanging. Good luck and let us know how you make out.
