Hi all

I donno if this message reaches you because my computer has a bad habit of freezing completely random regardless what I do.

My GFX Card btw is GeForce 7800 GT but I will soon be getting a 8800 GTX.

The problem is Windows XP SP2 fully updated btw, freezes constantly, completely random, with no warning, no error, nothing.

Doesnt matter what I do. if I game or read a document or just leave it alone or downloading something like drivers or a game demo, etc.

I have tried virus scan, adware scan, with 3 different programs, defrag 3 times per drive, equals 15 defrags, all this in safe mode with and without networking, in normal mode, in debugging mode, still no luck.

I have tried putting in newest drivers, no luck.

I have tried plugging out all of my USB hardware. With no luck.

I have NOT tried unplugging all harddrives exept Windows drive (Raptor 74.5 GB.) as well as taking out all the USB 2.0 Ports/Hubs (I have 2 of those.) Because I do not believe it should be such a big issue if it could be solved with System Restore in the first place (Yes I have read most threads regarding constant freezeup on this forum, and in most of them, system restore has been suggested, but since mine was turned off a few months ago to save disk space. I am afraid to inform you that it is out of the question.)

I have also... """checked""" ... my PSU (How I do that is out of my thoughts of reach. But I am guessing unplugging harddrives and dvd room?)

Also, sometimes, after the windows loading screen, it just stays black without anything happening.

But it never freezes or gives me any trouble in DOS/Bootup/Startup mode before Windows XP.

I would really appreciate help

Sincerely Yours

Red Von Hammer

PS: I have tried the www.pcinput.com or www.pcputin.com or whatever it was called. With no luck.

But I must say, all this trouble DID start after I got a virus through MSN. I thought I had removed it, but now and then there are symptoms.

Check and post your temperatures.
Check the CPU, case, and PSU fans
Check the airflow through the power supply
Clean the box with a can of compressed air

Memory test
http://memtest86.com/
There is a version to create a bootable floppy diskette and/or an ISO for creating a CD.
Run it overnight and any failures are unacceptable.

Besides all the good information everyone else gave you. Microsoft has a nasty habit of making some drivers for other people's hardware. A lot of the time they don't work right. For instance the 3com network cards. MS's version doesn't work right.

It may not help but also check your Monitor Driver. Change it from Default Monitor to Plug and Play Monitor. Even if your monitor isn't Plug-n-play.

Right click on My Computer, then Left Click on Manage. Then double click on Event Viewer. Check your System Logs and Application Logs. They should contain some information on what might be the problem. It may not depending on if it crashes before the PC has time to report the problem to Windows.

Try www.SuperAntiSpyware.com. They make the best Anti Spyware software. They have a free version just as good as the pay version.

Thank you all, I will try all theese tips.

I reinstalled windows btw, it is completely fresh, yet, after a few hours, it froze again.

My CPU temperature is at an average of 30 to 35 degree celcius. My graphics card at around 60 in idle.
My tower temp is about 40 (assuming the sensors of my Aerogate II is correct.) Harddrives are at 40-45 in idle, and 55 at full speed.

All in all, everything would seem to work correctly.

Hi, did you ever find the cause/solution to this? Im having the same exact problem. Windows freezes randomly and sometimes constantly. No errors or warnings. Sometimes, when I do a hard reboot after a freeze, the screen turns black after the Windows Logo. Im hoping it's a hardware issue like a bad graphics card or something. Hopefully, its not a bad harddisk because I really dont want to reinstall everything.
