Anyone ever see this. All of the Windows fonts (i.e. Icon names, Menus, taskbars, window titiles) have all turned to the wingding language, which is lines and symbols, if you open a program the program language is fine it's just anything that has to do with the windows shell language. Dos mode runs fine. All language settings seemt o be okay, though I can't really read symbols so I'm not positive. Changing the language settings didn't do anything though. I got a message that the wupdater.exe wasn't responding while rebooting, forced the program to close and rebooted. Upon logging back on all windows fonts were in wingding. Any help from anyone would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

Try system restore first, you can also do a search on the site. I have seen a couple of threads regarding that problem and it was resolved. Another thing you should do is check your PC for malicious codes.

Thanks sabertooth, I tried a system restore but everyone said it couldn't load. I did a search for a couple of things and did find one thread on it, I tried what was suggested and I've got it partially fixed, I can at least see icon names now, still having issues with a lot of windows, and of course now my keyboard is typing wrong characters when keys are depressed, grrrr if it's not one thing it's another. I've gone through windows system directories lookign for some of the more popular malicious code, but haven't found any so far.

anyone know any other tricks to get the rest of the windows back, I'm not sure where the controls are in XP for other things like text in explorer and in various windows boxes.

thanks for your help

I am having the same problems with my font also. I don't know how to do system restore. Also if I did, I don't know if I can even read how to get there. What did you do that fixed it partially? I would appreciate any help. Thanks.

Hey Jim, if you do a search on here for wingdings it will pull up a thread that has what you need to do. Basically you need to go under the display properties and go to the apperance tab which should be the 4th tab from the left. Goto the advanced tab which should be bottom right of the window. Once there click on the item drop down and go through all item in there, assign font to each of them that you can. This should clear up half of the things in there, enough to finish the fix. You will then need to check under control panel - Fonts - to see if your fonts are there, probably not. You will need to find the fonts and copy them into this directory, mine were under a fonts dirctory under program files. Once you get the fonts to stay in the control panel fonts directory you can reboot and everything should come back, it took me 4 tries to get the fonts to actually stay there. Unfortunately whatever happened also messed up my Internet explorer by deleting the version information, as well as killing the keyboard driver, I couldn't fix the ksyboard without IE which kept thinking it was lower than 5.5. I eventually had to give up and re-install XP. I've got IE working again but still having a problem with the keyboard typing the wrong letters. Not sure what's up with that.

Good luck
