Where do I check the settings for this, and is it an adequate firewall. Thanks.

Control Panel > Network Connections

Right-click your internet connection and then click on Properties.

Click on the Advanced tab and check Internet Connection Firewall.

And no, in my opinion, it's not an adequate firewall...

No its not adequate. It only blocks certain incoming traffic, but not the traffic that is outgoing from your computer.

It is VERY IMPORTANT that you get another personal firewall. Try out the zone alarm free version. There's also other options such as Kerio, Norton, but Zone Alarm is the best! (free version that is). Should do the job!

The firewall that comes with XP SP1 is inadequate as it only monitors incoming connections.

However, the improved firewall that come with XP SP2 is a vast improvement as it monitors outgoing connections as well. It will not allow anything to be downloaded on your computer that you have nor specifically asked for.

Hell, I checked it and the damn thing wasn't even in use! Think I will check out Zone Alarm though. I am beginning to distrust all things Windows. Thanks for the tips.

One point is that all recommendations I have read note that if you are using a program such as ZoneAlarm then disable the XP one. If you run the network wizard then it usually turns the firewall back on.

Nothing wrong with Windows if you RTFM!

I agree, nothing wrong if you RTFM. Zonealarm is crap, as most decent firewalls will work fine on top of ICF.

Windows ICF is not inadequate, it's simply not a complete solution. Its good enough to keep blaster variants off your computer which is more than I can say for zonealarm.

Just my half pence...

I would go with zonealarm 4. I installed the 5 version and wound up with all sorts of problems--had to go back to 4--and I paid for the thing.
