Installed Win XP SP2 this morning. When the system rebooted, it asked if I wanted to turn the windows filewall on. On attempting to start, I got an error stating the service was not turned on and asked if I wanted to turn it on. Said yes. Was unable to start service. When I go to the Windows console and try to start the service, I get error number 10047. Have rebooted numerous times, made sure dependednt services are started, etc. , but I get the same message every time.

Any suggestions are appreciated. Thx.

Are you using any other firewall besides the XP SP2 one?
This may be an alternative, as I shut down my SP2 firewall because I use Sygate Personal Firewall which works great and is a freebie.
Sorry I couldn't answer your question but thought I would give you a suggestion.

Go to Start, Settings, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, and click on the Services Icon.
Now look for a entry called:
Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing.
and set it to Automatic
and Apply and reboot and it will load automatically.

Thanks for the suggestions. I am not running another firewall, though I am running Norton Antivirus 2005 which seems to run a lot more services than earlier version.

I do have Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing set at automatic, but when I look at it after robooting, it does not show the service as having "Started." And if I attempt to start it, that's when I get the message "could not start windows firewall/internet connection sharing" and the error 10047.

Any other ideas? Thx...

Go to the URL below and read through the services and look for those that Windows Firewall relies on and make sure you have those services running.

Thanks for the suggestion. I went to the link and made an e-mail support request. I did find one post on the security forum where the guy had the same problem, but nobody has replied with a solution. Also found the problem on another forum I found thru Google, but again no solution.

Any other thoughts?? Thx..

strgte54 -- thanks for your suggestion. I sent an e-mail support request last night and got a solution that worked this morning. In case anyone else finds this thread looking for an answer, here it is:

Step 1: Winsock reset

================

1. Go to the command prompt and then type the command "Netsh winsock reset"

Got a message saying that to complete the reset Restart your computer restart the computer and then reinstall tcpip

Step 2: Reinstall TCP/IP

==================

1. Go to Folder options and to tab named view

2. Choose the options to show hidden files and folders

3. Apply the settings and the open the network connection window

4. Right click on the network connection and then try to install TCP/IP from there
