windows fails to load 1/2 the time

Specs: Windows XP
alright i start my computer, running XP home edition. half the time or slightly more then half the time i get to the windows loading screen and the loading bar freezes and windows does not load no matter how long i give it. If i restart my computer it will freeze again on the loading screen 100% of the time. If i turn off and turn on my computer via the power button on front panel same deal, it will freeze again at the same spot 100% of the time.
i have thus far been combating this problem by after the freeze turning off the power via the power button on the front panel, and when the system shuts down killing power to the power supply via the power switch in the back and waiting 10 seconds. turning back on the back power switch and starting normally. I will get a windows failure to load with the normal options and start windows normally works 100% of the time.

i have made no hardware additions to my computer, and this issue seems to be progressive. i used to deal with this perhaps once every 5 start ups and now its slightly over half my start ups.

Power supply or motherboard would be my guess. Power supply cheaper/easier to swap out, so I would try that first. If its mobo, can be a pain as often need to replace cpu & ram too (depending on age) - or look for second hand on ebay. And new (different) mobo means reinstall or repair reinstall, normally.
