Comment:

I am running Windows XP home, and have encountered a problem with windows explorer, in that every time I try and access it from anywhere it won't load up, instead the taskbar disappears and then comes back again and I get an error message.

This problem followed after I inserted a cd with various software programs on it and the start up menu for this cd had 'an error with the mainboard' (I think it said).

Can anyone help me? Do I need to reload Windows?

Try this, click on:
Start
My computer
Whatever your hard drive's name is
Windows
Windows update setup files
ie6setup

Internet explorer should start to reload via a download from MS as opposed to using the files already installed on your PC or from the Windows CD.

Actually I have no problem with Internet Explorer, it is Windows Explorer or My Computer that will not load.

DOH!!
I should have read that a little more carefully.

Have you tried a system restore?

How about this(from the command line)
sfc /scannow

The command line is acessed by clicking
Start
Run
type in "cmd" (no quotes)
Now enter the sfc /scannow command. You will need your Windows CD if prompted.

Brilliant! I just did a system restore, a very handy little tool that I will have to remember, and it's all working again! Thanks a lot!!
