On one of my other computers here at the house something strange happened. Up until about 3 days ago it worked fine. It has all the updates from microsoft including SP-2. This is the computer the children use. As of 3 days ago the computer anytime Windows tries to access anything using Windows Explorer it gives an error. You can click on "My Computer" but if you try to click on say a drive (any drive fixed or not) it gives a "Windows Explorer has encountered an error" error. Asking me if I want to submit to Microsoft or not. This has effected everything that requires Explorer. I can open control panel but if I try to click on "Administration" it gives me this error. I have networking. I can access and run most programs installed. I have scanned for viruses after this occurred using Mcafee's and it did not find any viruses but it did find 49 "suspicious" scripts. All from internet spyware applications. Gator, quicksearchit and others. As I said this is the childrens computer and they go to all their teenager sites where they have advertising and webbugs and who knows what else. These may have been coincidence. The spyware check came up clean.

When I boot up in Safe mode or Safe mode with Networking I can access everything. Explorer works fine. This only happens in regular mode. When I look in the Event log (when in safe mode since I Cant access it in standard boot mode) I do not show any system errors relating to the explorer errors.

Any suggestions or advice to help me repair this problem without having to wipe and reinstall WinXP would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I ran most all of those suggested programs. I found a trojan. I found a ton of spyware that mcafee's did not find. All of it was removed and innoculated but I still have the same Windows Explorer error. Windows boots fine. Most programs will still run. I can access the internet and the network. But anytime I need to use Explorer I get the same "Windows Explorer has encountered an error and needs to close" so I cannot access any of the drives or network places or Administration functions. Any other suggestions on how to resolve this issue other then reinstalling Windows XP Pro?
